Meet Kiwi, our common emu. Her story starts with Dino, our longtime resident emu, who was sad after his mate died. The rescue looked for another emu for him but couldn't find one, then heard about another rescue with an emu egg that needed a place to go. Kiwi's mother had been killed and the egg was almost ready to hatch, so it was brought to us and Kiwi hatched here on April 8, 2023.
Hand raised from just 437 grams (about a pound), she grew up thinking she was a person and for two years our matchmaking seemed to have failed; she wanted nothing to do with being an emu. But recently, finally, she has started wanting to spend time with Dino. Now she wants to be an emu! Apart from a couple of bumps along the way (all healed), she is a big, healthy emu, active at her July 2026 exam, and she has never known any other home.
Give a gift that's larger than life! Your sponsorship of Kiwi helps provide her food, expert veterinary care, and a safe home for life at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue!
