Captain, our African goose, has been holding court at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue for more than fifteen years, since at least 2010, and probably longer. His medical chart only begins in February 2020, when the rescue switched record systems; the oldest records didn’t survive the move, so his exact arrival year is lost. Jennifer calls him the oldest, sweetest boy at the rescue and she’ll happily tell you, he’s the biggest, fattest, softest goose in the barn!
Senior life here comes with senior care. Captain has arthritis so his days include daily medication for comfort (tucked into a blueberry), wheelchair exercise sessions, baths, and careful foot care. It also comes with company! His girlfriend, Lieutenant “LuLu,” is also part of his world.
Every winter, the team holds its breath a little and every spring, Captain is still here “doing great in the barn,” as his chart reported on October 22, 2026. Geese can live up to 50 years and everyone here hopes Captain makes it that long. In his own words: “I honkin’ love living at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue!”
